Twelve Hours' Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old: A Step-by-Step Plan for Baby Sleep Success

There is no bigger issue for healthy infants than sleeping through the night. In this simple, straightforward book, Suzy Giordano presents her amazingly effective "Limited-Crying Solution" that will get any baby to sleep for twelve hours at night - and three hours in the day - by the age of twelve weeks old.

Giordano is the mother of five children and one of the most sought-after baby sleep specialists in the country. The Washington Post calls her a baby sleep "guru" and "an underground legend in the Washington area for her ability to teach newborns how to achieve that parenting nirvana: sleeping through the night." Her sleep plan has been tested with singletons, twins, triplets, babies with special needs, and colicky babies - and it has never failed.

Whether you are pregnant, first-time parents, or parents who seek a different path with your second or third child, anyone can benefit from the Baby Coach's popular system of regular feeding times, twelve hours of sleep at night and three hours of sleep during the day, and the peace of mind that comes with taking the parent and child out of a sleep-deprived world.

Please note: This book has also been published under the title The Baby Sleep Solution: A Proven Program to Teach Your Baby to Sleep Twelve Hours a Night.

This book was a great guide to sleep training. It was a happy medium between coddling (my preference) and the aggressive Ferber method (my husband's preference). We actually started sleep training late - at about 3 months when I went back to work. And we never ended up successfully going 4 hours between feeds. 3 hours seemed to be our little girl's max and I didn't want stretch it any further than that. That said, within a week she was doing 8-10 hour stretches, and then when we upped her to 6oz bottles around 4 months she started going the full 12 hours. There were a few takeaways that I found really valuable. 1) setting a feeding/nap/bedtime routine 2) making sure she was getting enough milk during the day sustain her all night. For my little girl that's 30oz - 6oz every 3 hours from 7AM to 7PM. It all seems obvious to me now, but as a new mom I found the advice to be rather enlightening. :)The one caveat is that I am not sure how effective this would be for an exclusively breast fed baby. I breast feed in the morning and then pump to supply the other 4 feeds, including pumping around 8PM and 11PM after she has gone to bed. In other words, I do not produce 30oz between 7AM - 7PM. However, because I pump a day+ in advance I can feed her on that schedule. If I am traveling and am not giving bottles, I DO NOT follow this schedule and let her wake me up to nurse whenever she wants. At the end of the day, the baby's tummy is more important than the mommy's rest.In short, I would treat this book as GUIDE and not as GOSPEL. Read it, try it, but ultimately do what works best for you and your baby.

May work if you are feeding formula but if you are breastfeeding I don't see how this will work. The book wants you to have your baby on a schedule and know how much they're eating and with breastmilk there is no way to know .... wish it was more helpful but will not work if you are feeding on demand

This book is amazing..It was recommended by 2 friends whom I trust and respect as mommas. I wish I had this book when my older kids were infants! She takes you step by step on how to train your baby to sleep and it all begins with their feedings. First she has you write down when your baby eats from birth to 6-8 weeks. Your baby will naturally be on a schedule. You don't force your schedule, but figure out what your infants schedule is. I used the baby tracker app. Otherwise I would have no clue since I am super busy with 3 older kids. She doesn't recommend to begin sleep training until your child is 6 weeks and 10 pounds. If your infant is not both, than you don't begin until both are true. You start with the first feeding of your day and try to make it a little longer (a little longer by a min-15 min./ don't make your baby cry to prolong.. change their diaper.. use one of the tools she gives you for daytime). I began this at 8 weeks.. I had this realization that when I fed my son less than 3 hours between feedings that he literally would throw up all the milk I just fed him. So I began by feeding him every 3+ hours because I knew that he could go that long. He honestly would sleep long enough that it wasn't a problem. I didn't make him cry. I would change his diaper.. prolonging it a few minutes, then feed him. He eventually on his own would go 4 hours in between feedings during the day. As I stretched his feedings during the day, he naturally would sleep longer at night. (She also says this is what your infant will do in the book). He started at 6 hours... a week went by & it was 7 hour stretch, than 8/9, than 10 hour stretches between his nighttime feedings. Then on his own he slept 11 hours. There were times during the 6 weeks of training him I felt like we took a step back (which she says is normal). But after he slept 11 hours on his own several times.. when he woke up 2 times in the middle of the night I knew he wasn't hungry.. so I just gave him his pacifier. The next nights he slept on his own through the night 11-12 hours. This happens gradually, & is not an overnight solution. Stick to what she says in the book & it will be a domino effect. Your baby will sleep in longer stretches gradually until it's 12 hours and 4 feedings that are 4 hours apart during the day.You begin with the first feeding, then when he naturally goes 4 hours in between, you begin on feeding #2, than feeding #3, than feeding #4.. and have your infant eat a little later.. by a min, or 5 min. Each minute is a minute gained. That's when I would prolong his feedings (sometimes just by a few minutes each time because I changed his diaper. But it gave me a better idea of when he was hungry and when he was tired. She gives you a list of tools for daytime and nighttime. I honestly didn't use them all the time, but they were an excellent resource if I needed them. The progression was very natural. He would go longer and longer at night sleeping as I fed him closer to every 4 hours during the day. My feedings (I'm breastfeeding) went from being every 11-13 minutes every 2-3 hours, to 20-25 minutes every 4 hours. Her list of tools work. She even has had success with parents of multiples. Even now my son will sometimes wake up early from his nap (during the day b/c I have to transfer him in his car seat someplace b/c I have older kids) but I can still tell he's tired. I'm not a momma who lets her baby's cry. So I feed him when he's hungry, & this has taught me when he's not hungry, but tired.Highly recommend.. !!!

as an exclusively breastfeeding mother i felt this method hard to apply for our life.

It's not easy to follow this guidance because your baby needs to eat at least 24oz a day and 6 or 8 oz per feeding which is quite difficult for a 3-month baby to reach. Whereas the book doesn't have any advice to increase the baby's appetite and help him/her eat more in each feeding

This book was the best gift I ever received in my life. I had my twins sleep trained by 13 weeks. I did combo breastfeeding & bottle and had no problem following this book. I recommend while you are doing the actual training (approx 2-3 weeks) you use pumped breastmilk at night to know exactly how much you are giving the baby. After the training is done you'll never have to pump or breastfeed in the middle of the night again anyway. My boys are now 1 year old and they are in their cribs from 7:30 to 7:30 every single night and they love their cribs even if they aren't sleeping. This is not a cry-it-out method but it does require some serious dedication and strength during the actual training...this will not work for weak parents haha!

I had high hopes for this book but it's not compatible with breastfeeding. The book wants you to have your baby on a schedule and know how much they're eating and with breastmilk there is no way to know. It goes against the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. But by the time I finished reading it the return period was up. Now I'm stuck with the book.

Not good for breastfeeding mom. Great if only doing formula.
